Quotes from Reputable Publishing Houses:

"I admire Michael’s effort in piecing together a thoughtful portrait of Phyllis Hyman’s life, [however] I’m afraid that most people won’t recall her story."

"Jason handles the material in a smart, sensitive way that doesn’t lose any of the provocative, controversial elements. However, I’m afraid that Hyman simply isn’t well known enough."

"Phyllis Hyman was not the cult icon that someone like Marvin Gaye became after his death and it is too long after her death to publish a biography that will do well in the current marketplace."

That’s what they said. Do you believe it? I don’t. That’s why I formed my own company and put the book out myself; and why I’m calling for your assistance today. I’m not Uncle Sam, I’m Uncle JAM and I WANT YOU to join the fight.

I need all Phyllis Hyman fans to join me in this crusade to take her message and her story to the masses. I know in my heart, have known for some time, that it would be Phyllis’s dedicated and devoted fans that were going to make this story happen, and make it happen in a big way! Phyllis fans are everywhere, all across the country and world, and you know what they say about six degrees of separation, right?

The big publishing houses, which thought Phyllis was too small a star for them to be bothered with, have massive marketing and publicity teams. I don’t. But what I have is you, and I think that puts me ahead in the game. You will be my street team and be a critical component in the marketing and publicity of this book. You, who love Phyllis, understand that her story needs to be told, deserves to be told, and must be told.

What needs to be done:

  • We need radio exposure. Let’s face it, radio loved Phyllis! If we can get her story on radio across the country, the message will get out. If you know or have connections to any local or national radio show hosts who you think may be interested in doing an interview or helping to promote the book, hip them to me and this site – then let me know how to reach them so I can follow up. I’m talking largely about urban contemporary and urban talk radio, but I’m open to speaking with anyone who’d like to help. Also, don’t forget the jocks. I’d be happy to do call-ins with any disc jockey gracious enough to allow me to do so or I’d be thrilled even if they could mention the book and site name before of after playing a Phyllis tune.
  • We need print exposure. If you know of any reporters, reviewers or columnists across the country that may be interested in doing a review or feature about the book, tell them about this site and tell me about them.
  • We need big mouths! Yup, ya heard me! Big mouths! The most important thing you can do is simply spread the word. Tell your friends, the girls at the office, in the beauty shop, on the bus, Auntie Trina and Cousin Kiki, tell any-damn-body who you think may be even remotely interested. Do not underestimate the power of plain ‘ol word of mouth.
  • Finally, we need prayer! If you can do nothing else – and even if you’re already doing more – please, please do this and things will happen. Doors will open up. And this story, the story of our girl, will get out!
